Design: Kennedy Nolan / Photography: Derek Swalwell / Designed by Fitzroy based architecture practice Kennedy Nolan, Caroline House is a restoration and addition to an Edwardian weatherboard house located in Melbourne's inner suburbs. Kennedy Nolan's design restored and re-imagined the existing weatherboard house, while the addition of a new pavilion separated from the original building by an internal courtyard and swimming pool breathes new life into the location. Although characterised by an eccentric formal quality, Kennedy Nolan's approach to the design of Caroline House does not challenge the paradigm of the traditional family home. Functional aspects are not compromised by playful forms, Caroline House accommodates the dynamic and complex requirements of family life comfortably and efficiently. Caroline House is a wonderful blend of old and new, transitioning between original details and taking you on a journey through to the modern additions. Kennedy Nolan's design pays homage to the home's historical past and opens the door to its future.
